Japan lodges formal protest over Chinese survey ship entering its territorial waters
- By YURI KAGEYAMA - Associated Press
Japan lodged a formal protest via China’s embassy against what it called an incursion by a Chinese survey ship into its territorial waters. The Japanese foreign ministry relayed “strong concern” Saturday after the ship was spotted near Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan, early in the morning. The Chinese ship, confirmed in territorial waters at 6 a.m. local time, left shortly before 8 a.m., according to Japan’s Defense Ministry, adding it was monitored by a Japanese military vessel and plane. This follows Tokyo’s protest after a Chinese military aircraft briefly entered Japan’ssouthwestern airspace on Monday.

Kimi Antonelli named as Lewis Hamilton’s replacement at Formula 1's Mercedes
- AP
Kimi Antonelli has been named as Lewis Hamilton’s replacement next year at Mercedes, a day after his Formula One debut ended in the 18-year-old driver hitting the wall. Antonelli took over for George Russell in the opening practice session for Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza. But his much-anticipated first appearance lasted fewer than six laps, and only 10 minutes, after he lost control of his Mercedes, sliding backwards through the gravel and into the tire barrier. Team principal Toto Wolff said Saturday the crash would have no impact on Antonelli’s F1 chances.

It is widely used in Russia, where crashes have been frequent, as well as in neighboring countries and many other nations.

Catholics face a shortage of priests. But one Indonesian seminary is overwhelmed with applicants
- By NINIEK KARMINI - Associated Press
Arnoldus Yansen thought for certain he was going to become a Catholic priest, just like his older brother, cousin and uncle. Instead, Yansen took off his clerical robes for good and joined the hundreds of prospective priests who resign or fail to take up Catholic vocations every year in Indonesia. Fallout from the clergy sex abuse crisis and the pull of the fast-paced modern world is causing a shortage of priests globally. Still, Ritapiret Seminary is overwhelmed with applicants. Beyond the internal challenges, violent attacks are also a concern of the church in Indonesia, where Catholics are a religious minority in a mostly Muslim country.
